Mixing & Mastering for rock & metal artists

Exactly how you imagine your songs - without the stress.

Hey, I’m Dan!

I'm a metal drummer turned mix engineer. That's not a fun fact, it's the reason your drums won't sound like samples pasted to a grid. I started playing in local bands with way more ambition than talent, took my first shot at recording in high school, failed pretty hard, and loved the process enough to keep going anyway.

That failed-but-kept-going energy is kind of my whole thing.

In the 10+ years Since…

I've toured North America and Europe as a front of house engineer and tour manager, tracked sessions in world-class studios, worked as a production manager, and taught audio production at the college level. I've been in the van, behind the console, and in the classroom. I know what it takes to make a record and what it takes to actually survive as a working musician.

But here's what matters more than any of that:

I'm not going to talk down to you. I'm not going to steamroll your vision. I'm not going to pretend I have all the answers. What I will do is show up, dig into the problem, and figure it out.

I see us as equals on different parts of the same journey. You bring the creative direction. I bring the ears, the experience, and the obsessive need to make your kick drum feel like a punch to the sternum.

WHAT MAKES THIS DIFFERENT

The Drummer's Ear I spent years behind a kit before I ever touched a fader. That means I understand how important it is to not just makes things sound good, but to feel good. Capture the energy that makes you, you. The way a kick locks with a bass line. The way a snare cuts without killing the vocal. For drum-forward genres like metal, metalcore, and pop punk. That physical instinct is everything.

The Anti-Ego Engineer I've heard the horror stories. The engineer who ignored your input. The guy who made your record sound like his record. That's not how this works. Give me the problem and trust me to find the solution, but the vision is always yours. I'm transparent about what I don't know and excited to figure it out together. No one has time for assholes, and this is supposed to be the best part.

Textural Elevation I don't just make your tracks louder or cleaner. I add subtle sonic textures. Atmospheric layers, sound design elements, harmonic details that elevate your song's world without stripping its raw energy. It's the difference between a good mix and a mix that sounds like your mix.

More Than Mixing I've been a touring FOH engineer, a production manager, a tour manager, and a professor. If you've got questions about life beyond the mix (touring logistics, industry navigation, next career steps, etc.) I've probably been in that exact situation. You're not just hiring an engineer. You're getting a team member who's been in the trenches.

What Artists are Saying

“Dan is a super talented and great guy. He mixed the audio for my band’s drum playthrough… Would recommend Dan to anyone looking for solid quality work!”

Jimmy Pino (Ex-Signs of the Swarm, Independent)

“Dan is an amazing all around studio guy. Extremely professional and always puts out a great mix no matter the project! He's a great help with the creative process as well. I would trust him with my first born child.”

-Bryan Loy (The Hawkshaws)

“Dan Meyer and his work on our track “Hey Hey!” at Think Loud Studios was very efficient, deliberate, and clean. In terms of a mix engineer who will work with you for your sound, and product, you should highly consider this guy”

-Justin Angelo (Justin Angelo Band)

“Dan has truly helped me improve as an artist through his attention to detail, alone.  As I tend to be a perfectionist, Dan has met me there each time and has tracked my best vocals on a record to date.

Working with previous sound engineers, I always felt rushed and settling for "good enough" with them.  However, I no longer have had those complaints since working with Dan.  Not only have I gotten to record as many times as we needed to, but he's also provided so much support when I would get discouraged.

I can't recommend working with Dan enough.  Truly has made me love recording music again.”

-Gavin Mayne (Gavin Mayne)

  FAQs

  • Because I've been on both sides of the glass. I started as a drummer in bands just like yours — same big dreams, same frustration when the recordings didn't match what we heard in the room. I've spent over a decade solving that exact problem, and I've made every mistake along the way so you don't have to. But more than that: I only take on projects where I know I can genuinely help. If we're not the right fit, I'll tell you. If we are, I'm all in.

  • Mixing is a collaborative process. This is a conversation, not a handoff. I'll ask for reference tracks, your creative input, and anything you can tell me about the vibe you're chasing — even if it's just "I want it to feel like that one part in that one song." You don't need to speak in technical terms. That's my job. You'll get a "vibe check" mix to react to, plus two rounds of revisions. Your vision drives the whole process.

  • You absolutely can — and if you're learning the craft, you should. But there's a difference between mixing for clarity and mixing for impact. I bring trained ears, objectivity you can't get on your own material, and a decade of learning what actually works versus what the internet says works. In dense, aggressive genres, a pro mix is the difference between "pretty good" and "physically crushing."

  • Now. Seriously — the earlier we talk, the better. I can give tracking tips that'll save you time, money, and headaches in the mix. Things like mic choices, DI tones, room treatment hacks, and arrangement calls that make a massive difference downstream. Let's get the conversation started before you're locked in.

  • Yeah — I ask for half upfront to lock your spot on the calendar. But here's the deal: if the mix doesn't pass the "vibe check," that deposit is 100% refundable. I'm not interested in taking money for work that doesn't hit. Simple as that.

  • You'll get your first mix within 48 hours of the scheduled start date, assuming I've got all your files. From there, we'll set a target date for final delivery. To keep things on track, I just ask that you get revision notes back to me within 24 hours. I respect your time — I just ask for the same in return.

  • I do. I work out of some incredible studios in Central Pennsylvania — Think Loud Studios and Atrium Audio. If you're looking to record, let me know through the Get Started form and we'll figure out what makes sense for your project and budget.

  • A polished, radio-ready mix and master that you're going to be proud to put your name on. You'll also get processed stereo stems of each instrument group, an acapella mix, and an instrumental mix. If you need backing tracks with click for playing live, I can put those together too for a small additional fee.
